at 8 PM. Ilusiness will be transacted, and the Association will hear the
report of the Nominating CommIttee for 1953 officers.
NOTICE TO ASSOCIATE l€JlERS
rhis issue of the
News Report concludes the 1952 subscription. During the
year 1952, the Editorial Coc~ittee has issued more than 75 pages of news,
and documentary c§terlal, including histories, rosters, diagrams and maps.
An examination of the revenue and expenditure figures for the year, has
prompted the Editorial Conmlttoe to seek the Associations authority to
increase the subscription rate froe $1.00 to $1.50 per annum, effective with
the January issue. It is hoped that the subscribers will understand that
this step is taken only as a last resort, in order to help in defraying
publication costs. While the increase will raise the Editorial Committees
incoce by 50%, the News Report will even then not be self-supporting but will
continue to depend u90n grants from the Association for tho major part of
its upkeep. If the number of subscribers continuo to increase as they
have during 1952, the Editorial Conmitteo hopes oventually to have enough
income
to include photo-offset
pageD from time to time, for the purpose
of publishing photographs, docUJJonts, diagrans and maps.
To this end, tho goodwill~6f the associato menber subscribers is sought,
not only to continue their Oi~ subscriptions, but to obtain tho ~jes of
other interested individuals to support our publication. Sample copios can
bo obtained by addressing a postcard to tho Editorial Commit toe.

ASSOCJ!TIOll NEWS
On Sunday, November 22nd. 1952, fifteen nembers of the Association partic
ipated in an outing in car £.59 of the Montreal Transportation Comoission.
This excursion was for the purpose of riding: in n car of the well-101.own
703 class for the last time. As reported in our last issue, the last four
units of the 703 class were retired in October, and are scheduled to be
scrapped in the
Spring. Por the final trip. no.859 was operated from the
Youville Shops to the wye at Montreal Nord, and return to Youville. The
car was ~ecially cleaned for the occasion, and as it had been painted quite
recently. was of very good appearance for the many photoeraphs which 1ere
taken. No. 859 had been pl~ced in service in September 1907, and until
its final run in public service on October 20th. had chalked up somo
767.724 miles of revenue passonger service. This is not high as such
vehicles go. but the 703 class had been used in ruSh-hou~only oervice for
J!l8.ny years preceding their retirecent. lhich accounted for the comparatively
10 mileage during e 45-year career. Upon the return to Youville, those
pnrticipating were given a demonstration of car operation on the teot loop
at Youvllle Shops, by our vory good friond, In~tructor T. Bo~enfant, after
which nol 859 WllS put 8.fay for the last time, with many a backward glance.
)
At the beginning of the trip, a presentation was made by Mr. R.M. Binns ; .. : on
behalf of l~r. D.E. Blair, former Vice President and Genoral Hanagar of the
Montreal TraJ!tl,Iays Conpa.Ily, of a 1 scale code1 of a single truck for an open
passenger car. This I:!ode1 is constructed entirely of brass, and was built
by a professional nodel maker, A. Gravel, in 1895. This beautifUlly-wrought
model
wa.s obtained through Hr. Lindsay, Superintendent of Rolling Stock of
the MTC, 8…1d ,HI forD onG of the nore ir.lportant and interesting exhibits in
car 274 when restoration of the latter is completed. Wo are vory much indeb
ted to Mr. Blair and to Mr~ Lindsay for entrusting this splendid souvenir of
the heyday of the trolley car, to the Associntion, for preservation.

LOTllINIER3 & :m:lANTIC RAILlIAY
Robert R.Brown
Abm:t 75
years seo, two brothers named King started a lumber business
at Ly~tory a village on the J3ecancour River and on the Grand Trunk Railway
line ftom Richmond to Point Levis. The GTR was in a position to serve them
adequntely but apparently they wanted to OlIn a railway.
Accordingly, the Lotbiniere & 14egantic R(l.ihlay was chartered by the Province
of Quoboc in 1889 to build from St.Jean des Chaillons on the StoLatlrenco
River to Lystor and Glcn Lloyd in l.fngantic County. Construction ste.rt.ed
in 1893 and the lino was completed from Dcschaillons to Lyster in 1895~
SubsoCluently the line was crossod about midway .ty the Intercolonial Ib.ilway
a.nd in honour of tho owners of the L&M, the crossing 18S called Kingsburg,
l
ater converted te Vil1eroy.
In 1907. tho Quebec Eastcrn Railway was Ruthorizcd to buy the L&M to form
pr.rt of an eloctric interurban line from Qp.eboc te Sherbrooko. Nothing
came of this cut in 1912, tho L&M WRS bought by the Quebec RailwAY Light
& Power Company te form part of a system ef eloctric interurban lines after
completion of tho quobec J3ridge. This did not mntorinlizo because of tho
WE.r nnd tho dolny in the completion of tho bridge nnd tho I.&M w~s sold to
tho D:>minion Government on December 1st, 1919. It l{fts tl.ken ovor by

tinuod am~cdiRtoly between Villeroy Rnd Lyster nnd the rnils wore lifted

Canadian Pacific and Canadian National systems will soon inaugurate the transport
ation of loaded truck trailers on flatcars batwoon Montreal and Toronto.
Trailers will circulate through tho city during the day, collocting shipmonts for

on flatcars, two to a car, and Shipped overnight to destination. The next morning
they will be picked up b,y truck trailers and the freight distributed, thus eli~
inating much handling from pick-up trucks to freight sheds, from sheds to cars,
then back to delivery trucks at destination. This procedure will be similar to
the service offered by the New Haven Railroad between ~ston and New York.
Canadian
